રોજ રોજ ફ્યુનરલમાં જવાનું થાય છે,
આવું કેમ થાય છે?

એક પછી એક સ્વજન સ્વધામ જાય છે,
આવું કેમ થાય છે?

ઊંમર કેવી આવી,મિત્રો ઓછા થાય છે,
આવું કેમ થાય છે?

વર્ષો વિતાવ્યા સાથ, સાથી ઓછા થાય છે,
આવું કેમ થાય છે?

બાગમાં ગાતી’તી કોયલ,ત્યાં કાગડાઓ જાય છે,
આવું કેમ થાય છે?

કેવી તે સાંજ આવી!સૂરજ રિસાતો જાય છે,
આવું કેમ થાય છે?

આજ-કાલ કેમ ફ્યુનરલમાં જવાનું થાય છે!

પાલીતાણા ભારતના ગુજરાત રાજ્યના ભાવનગર શહેરની નૈઋત્યમાં ૫૦કિ.મી. દૂર આવેલું છે. જૈનોનું આ અગત્યનું તીર્થસ્થાન છે. આ એક રજવાડું હતું.

વરસાદની  મોસમ અને  કોરી   નજર કહેવું પડે!
સાગર તરે  જ્યાં  માછલી   કાંધ પર કહેવું  પડે!

મુજ પ્રેમની વાતો નગરમાં આમ વાત થઈ પડી,
ત્યાં સૂર્યના તડકા વિશે  સૌ  બેખર    કહેવું પડે!

આકાશ  જેવા મૌનની ચાહત અમે   વાવી હતી,
ઘોંઘાટના સાગર ઊગ્યા પાંપણ  ઉપર કહેવું પડે!

ફરિયાદ એના નામની  કરવા  ગયો  દરબારમાં,
બુઠ્ઠી  કલમની ઘારની   જાણી અસર  કહેવું પડે!

વરસાદ કે વૈશાખ એ  તો   જિંદગીના છે ભરમ,
‘રશ્મિ’   સમજ કે બે ઘડી બાકી સફર કહેવું પડે!

એક હાઈકુ, જે અમર બની ગયું..

હાઈકુ-જાપાનો એ સઘન કાવ્યપ્રકાર છે , જેમાં માત્ર સત્તર અક્ષરોમાં એક સમગ્ર વિચાર કે દ્રશ્ય કે આદર્શ કહી દેવાય છે. હાઈકુનો ગુજરાતીમાં પ્રથમ પ્રયોગ કરનાર’સ્નેહરશ્મિ; એ પાંચ-સાત-પાંચ અક્ષરો વડે હાઈકુ રચ્યાં. પછી તો ગુજરાતીઓને આ કાવ્ય પ્રકારમાં ભારે રસ પડી ગયો. કોઈ કે  સેંકડો હાઈકુ રચ્યાં અને પાટણના મારા વડીલ મિત્ર મુકુંદભાઈ બ્રહ્મક્ષત્રિયે તો આઠ હજાર  જેટલાં હાઈકુ રચ્યાં.

                                દુનિયાભરમાં હાઈકુ રચાયાં, પરંતુ બધાં હાઈકુના પૂર્વજરૂપ અને આદર્શરૂપ હાઈકુ ટોકિયોના ફૂગાવા વિસ્તારમાં રહેનારા બાશોએ રચ્યું છે જે આ પ્રમાણે છે;
                                                  પ્રાચીન કુંડ
                                                                      એમાં કૂદે દેડકો-
                                                  છપ્પાક નીર.
હવે એ કવિ એ કુંડ, એ દેડકો, બધાં અમર બની ગયાં છે. બાશોનું રહેઠાણ રાષ્ટ્રીય સ્મારક છે. એ રહેઠાણ આગળ ઊંચા ચોતરા પર કૂદવા તત્પર દેડકાનું શિલ્પ છે. થોડેક છેટે વાશો મ્યુઝિયમ છે. ત્યાં દેડકા જ દેડકા છે. પેપર વેઈટ તરીકે, શૉ-કેસની શોભા તરીકે, કાગળ પર રેશમ પર… અરે બૂક-માર્ક તરીકે પણ ! એક કવિતાએ કૂદકો મારવા તત્પર દેડકાને રાષ્ટ્રનો લાડકો બનાવી દીધો છે.

પાંચ વર્ષે કુટુંબમાં ‘કર્તા’

                   ‘કર્તા’ શબ્દ ઈન્કમ-ટેક્ષની પરિભાષાનો છે. પરિવારના વડા માટે એ શબ્દ વપરાય છે. કલકતાનો પાંચ જ વર્ષનો એક બાલક એક પરિવારનો ‘કર્તા’(ભરણ-પોષણ કરનાર) બન્યો છે! એનું નામ બિલાલ.

                   બિલાલની કથા કોઈ પુસ્તક કે લેખમાં નહિ, પરંતુ એક દસ્તાવેજી ફિલ્મ દ્વારા કહેવામાં આવી છે. અલબત્ત એ કોઈ નવલકથાથી કમ નથી. બિલાલનાં માતાપિતા બન્ને અંધ છે. ઝૂપડપટ્ટીનાં રહેવાસી છે. મુફલિસ છે. પાંચ વર્ષનો બિલાલ એમની કાળજી અને સારવાર કરનાર એક્માત્ર પરિવારજન છે.

                    બંગાળના ફિલ્મ નિર્માતા સૌરવ સારંગી બંગાળી ભાષામાં બનાવેલી આ દસ્તાવેજી ફિલમમાં બેધડકપણે ‘હીરો’ની ભૂમિકા ભજવે છે. પાંચ જ વર્ષની વયે એ ‘પ્રૌઢ’ બની ગયો છે. દ્રરિદ્રત્તા અને અકાળ જવાબદારી બાળકને કેવું ઘડે છે, એ જાણાવતી આ દસ્તાવેજી ફિલ આંતરરાષ્ટ્રિય મેળાઓમાં સારો આવકાર પામી છે.

                    આશા રાખીએ કે આ ફિલ્મને ‘ગરીબીનું ગૌરવ કરવાનો ગુનો’ આચારનાર ગનવામાં નહિ આવે.

હેલોવીન (Halloween, અથવા Hallowe’en ) 31મી ઓક્ટોબરે ઉજવાતો તહેવાર છે. તેના મૂળ સેમહેઇનના સેલ્ટિક તહેવાર અને ઓલ સેન્ટ્સ ડેના ખ્રિસ્તી પવિત્ર દિવસમાં છે.

તે મોટે ભાગે એક બિનસાંપ્રદાયિક ઉજવણી છે, પરંતુ કેટલાક ખ્રિસ્તીઓ અને મૂર્તિપૂજકોએ તેના ધાર્મિક અર્થો અંગે તીવ્ર લાગણીઓ વ્યક્ત કરી છે. ^{[૧][૨][૩]} આઇરિસ વસાહતીઓ આયર્લેન્ડના 1846ના મહાન દુકાળ વખતે આ પરંપરાના પ્રકારો ઉત્તર અમેરિકા લઈ ગયા હતા. ^[૪] આ દિવસ સામાન્યપણે નારંગી અને કાળા રંગ સાથે સંકળાયેલો છે અને જેક-ઓ-લેન્ટર્ન જેવા પ્રતીકો સાથે ગાઢપણે જોડાયેલો છે.

હેલોવીન પ્રવૃત્તિઓમાં ટ્રિક-ઓર-ટ્રીટિંગ, ઘોસ્ટ ટુર્સ, બોનફાયર, વેશપરિધાન મિજબાનીઓ, ભૂતિયા આકર્ષણોની મુલાકાત લેવી, જેક-ઓ-લેન્ટર્ન કોતરવા, ડરામણી કથાઓ વાંચવી અને હોરર મુવી જોવાનો સમાવેશ થાય છે.

નવમી સદીમાં ચર્ચે ફ્લોરેન્ટાઇન પંચાંગ પ્રમાણે આ દિવસ સૂર્યાસ્તથી શરૂ થતો ગણ્યો. ઓલ સેન્ટ્સ ડે હવે હેલોવીનના એક દિવસ પછી આવતો હોવાનું મનાય છે, તેમ છતાં બંને, તે સમયે, એક જ દિવસે ઉજવવામાં આવતા હતા.

ઈતિહાસ

હેલોવીનના મૂળ સેમહેઇનના નામે ઓળખાતા પ્રાચીન સેલ્ટિક તહેવારમાં રહેલા છે. (ઢાંચો:IPA-ga; ઓલ્ડ આઇરિસમાંથીsamain, possibly derived from Gaulish samonios) ^[૫] સેમહેઇનનો તહેવાર ગેલિક સંસ્કૃતિમાં લણણીની મોસમના અંતની ઉજવણી છે. અને ક્યારેક ^[૬] “સેલ્ટિક નવા વર્ષ” તરીકે ઉજવાય છે. ^[૭] પરંપરાગત રીતે આ તહેવારનો ઉપયોગ પ્રાચીન સેલ્ટિક મૂર્તિપૂજકો શિયાળાના સંગ્રહ માટે પુરવઠાની ગણતરી કરવા અને પશુધનની કતલ કરવામાં કરતા હતા.
પ્રાચીન સેલ્ટો માનતા હતા કે 31મી ઓક્ટોબર (હાલ હેલોવીન તરીકે ઓળખાતી તારીખે) સજીવ અને નિર્જીવ વચ્ચેની ભેદરેખા ભૂંસાઈ ગઈ હતી અને બિમારી કે પાકને નુકસાન પહોંચાડીને મૃતકો જીવતાં લોકો માટે સમસ્યાઓ સર્જતા હતા.

તહેવારોમાં બોનફાયર્સ થાય છે, જેમાં કતલ કરાયેલા પ્રાણીઓના હાડકાં નાંખવામાં આવે છે.

આ તહેવારોમાં પ્રેત આત્માઓની નકલ કરવા કે તેમને રીઝવવાના પ્રયાસરૂપે પોષાકો અને મહોરાં પહેરવામાં આવે છે. ^[૮][૯]

યુરોપથી શરૂ થયેલા આ ફાનસો સૌ પહેલાં સલજમ કે રુતબાગામાંથી કોતરવામાં આવ્યા હતા.

માથુ/0} શરીરનો સૌથી શક્તિશાળી હિસ્સો છે, જેમાં આત્મા અને જ્ઞાન આવેલા છે, એવું માનતા સેલ્ટો કોઈ પણ વહેમને ભગાડવા માટે વનસ્પતિના “માથા”નો ઉપયોગ કરતા હતા. ^[૧૧] વેલ્સ, આઇરિસ અને બ્રિટિશ દંતકથાઓ ઉદ્ધત મસ્તકની પુરાણકથાઓથી ભરપુર છે, જે શીર્ષછેદનની પ્રાચીન સેલ્ટિકોની વ્યાપક પરંપરાની લોકસ્મૃતિ હોઈ શકે છે. આવા છેદાયેલા મસ્તકો મોટેભાગે બારણાની બારશાખ પર લટકાવવામાં આવતા હતા અથવા તો અગ્નિ સમક્ષ લાવવામાં આવતા હતા, જ્યાં તેઓ તેમનું ડહાપણ ઉચ્ચારતા હતા.

જેક-ઓ-લેન્ટર્ન નામ ^[૧૨] લોભીયા, જુગારી, અતિશય દારૂડિયા, ઘરડા કિસાનની આઇરિશ પુરાણકથા અધમ જેકમાં જડી શકે છે.

તેણે શેતાનને એક વૃક્ષ પર ચડવા માટે પ્રેર્યો હતો અને પછી વૃક્ષના થડમાં એક ક્રોસ કોતરીને તેને ફસાવ્યો હતો.

વેર વાળવા શેતાને જેકને પોલા સલજમમાં મુકેલી એકમાત્ર મીણબત્તીના પ્રકાશમાં રાતભર દુનિયામાં હંમેશ માટે ભ્રમણ કરવાનો  શ્રાપ  આપ્યો હતો.

ઉત્તર અમેરિકામાં હેલોવીન સાથે કોળાને કોતરવાનું કામ સંકળાયેલું છે. ^[૧૩] અહીં કોળા આસાનીથી પ્રાપ્ય નથી, પરંતુ મોટા હોવાથી સલજમ કરતા વધારે સરળતાથી તેમને કોતરી શકાય છે.

ઘણા કુટુંબો હેલોવીનની ઉજવણી કરવા કોળાને કોઈ ભયાનક કે રમુજી ચહેરા તરીકે કોતરીને અંધારા પછી તેમના ઘરના બારણા પાસે મુકે છે.

અમેરિકામાં કોળાને કોતરવાની પરંપરા આઇરિસ વસાહતીઓના ભીષણ દુકાળના ગાળા પછી શરૂ થઈ હોવાનું મનાય છે.

 કોતરેલા કોળા અમેરિકામાં સામાન્યપણે મૂળે લણણીના સમય સાથે સંકળાયેલા હતા અને 19મી સદીના મધ્યથી પાછોતરા ભાગ સુધી હેલોવીન સાથે ખાસ સંકળાયેલા નહોતા.

  
હેલોવીનની આસપાસ ઉભી થયેલી કલ્પનાસૃષ્ટિ મુખ્યત્વે કેટલીક બાબતોને આભારી છે. એક તો હેલોવીન મોસમ પોતે, પછી ગોથિક અને ભયના સાહિત્યિક સર્જનો, ખાસ કરીને ફ્રેન્કેસ્ટાઇન અને ડ્રેક્યુલાની નવલકથાઓ તેમજ અમેરિકી ફિલ્મનિર્માતાઓ અને ગ્રાફિક કલાકારોના એક સદીના સર્જનો ^[૧૪] અને છેલ્લે અંધકાર અને રહસ્યમયતાના વેપારીકરણનું મિશ્રણ છે.

હેલોવીન કલ્પનાસૃષ્ટિમાં  મૃત્યુ, અનિષ્ટ,  ગૂઢવિદ્યાt, જાદુ, કે પુરાણકથાના રાક્ષસોને પ્રયોજવાનું વલણ હોય છે. .

તેના પરંપરાગત ચરિત્રોમાં શેતાન, ગ્રિમ રીપર, પ્રેતો, પિશાચો, દાનવો, ડાકણો, કોળાના માનવો, ગોબલિનો, લોહી ચૂસતી વાગોળો, વેરવુલ્વ્ઝ, ઝોમ્બિઓ, મમીઓ, હાડપિંજરો, કાળી બિલાડીઓ, કરોળિયાઓ, ચામાચીડીયા, ઘુવડો, કાગડાઓ, અને ગીધોનો સમાવેશ થાય છે. ^[૧૫]

 ખાસ કરીને અમેરિકામાં, ફ્રેન્કેસ્ટાઇન્સ મોન્સ્ટર અને મમી જેવી કાલ્પનિક ચરિત્રો ધરાવતી પ્રશિષ્ટ ભય ફિલ્મોએ પ્રતીકવાદને પ્રેરણા આપી હતી.

પાનખરની મોસમના તત્વો, જેવા કે કોળા, મકાઈ કુશ્કી, અને ચાડીયો પણ પ્રચલિત છે.

હેલોવીનના દિવસોમાં ઘરોને આ પ્રકારના પ્રતીકોથી શણગારવામાં આવે છે.

History

 Walls of Jericho

Helloween formed in 1984 in Hamburg, Germany. The original line-up included Kai Hansen on vocals and guitar, Michael Weikath on guitar, Markus Grosskopf on bass, and Ingo Schwichtenberg on drums. That year, the band signed with Noise Records and recorded two songs for a Noise compilation record called Death Metal with bands Hellhammer, Running Wild, and Dark Avenger. The two tracks were “Oernst of Life” by Weikath, and Hansen’s “Metal Invaders,” a faster version of which would appear on the band’s first full-length album.

Helloween recorded and released its first record in 1985, a self-titled EP containing 5 tracks. Also that year, the band released its first full-length album, Walls of Jericho. During the following concert tour, Hansen had difficulties singing and playing the guitar at the same time. Kai’s last recording as the band’s lead singer was in 1986 on an EP titled Judas, which contained the song “Judas” and some live tracks. After that, Helloween began the search for a new vocalist.

 Keeper of the Seven Keys, Parts I & II

The band’s first choice was to recruit former Tyran’ Pace vocalist Ralf Scheepers, who had sung lead for the band on the short “Judas” tour; he declined. The band then found an 18-year-old singer, Michael Kiske, from local Hamburg band Ill Prophecy. With its new lead singer in tow, Helloween approached record labels Noise International and RCA and proposed the release of a double-LP to introduce the new line-up. It was turned down. Instead, it recorded Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I, which was released in 1987. In 1988, Helloween released Keeper of the Seven Keys Part II, the companion album. MTV put the single “I Want Out” into heavy rotation and in support of its “Headbanger’s Ball” show, it presented the inaugural Headbanger’s Ball Tour with Helloween joining Bay Area thrash-metal band Exodus in support of headlining act Anthrax. The band was slotted in the more prestigious second spot, right before Anthrax’s set. On the heels of this exposure to US audiences, the band achieved worldwide success.

Guitarist Kai Hansen unexpectedly left the band soon after the European leg of the Keeper of the Seven Keys Part II tour due to conflicts within the band, troubles with Noise International, and a growing dissatisfaction with life on tour. He was soon replaced by former Rampage guitarist Roland Grapow, who finished the rest of the tour with the band.

 Pink Bubbles Go Ape and Chameleon

In 1989 the band released a live album called Live In The UK(Keepers Live in Japan and I Want Out Live in the United States), featuring material from its 1988 European tour. The remaining members continued, but ran into label problems with Noise, and after litigation which kept them from touring and releasing new material, were eventually released from their contract. A new album would not appear until 1991 when, after several rumors about the band’s breaking up, they released Pink Bubbles Go Ape for their new record company, EMI. The album was less heavy, and with song titles such as “Heavy Metal Hamsters”, “I’m Doing Fine, Crazy Man”, and “Shit and Lobster”, showed a shift toward—and an emphasis on—humor rather than the epic moods on previous releases. As a result, Pink Bubbles Go Ape failed both commercially and critically, and tensions started to build amongst the band members. ^[2]

The pop-influenced follow-up Chameleon was released in 1993. Instead of taking a heavier approach, the band ventured into new territory, eschewing its signature double-guitar harmonies for synthesizers, horns, acoustic guitars, a children’s chorus, country music, grunge, and swing. As with the previous album, Chameleon failed commercially and critically ^[2]. Tensions within Helloween worsened, and the band split into three factions, with Michael Kiske and Ingo Schwichtenberg on one side, Michael Weikath and Roland Grapow on the other, and Markus Grosskopf in the middle, trying to keep peace between the four men.

 Kiske’s departure

Shortly after, the band began to disintegrate. During the Chameleon tour, the band would often play to half-filled venues. Drummer Ingo Schwichtenberg fell ill due to mental and drug-related issues, and was eventually fired, replaced by session drummer Ritchie Abdel-Nabi. Meanwhile, the conflicts within the rest of the band worsened, with Michael Weikath refusing to work any longer with Michael Kiske. The decision was made to fire Kiske. Since his firing, Kiske has not spoken positively about Helloween and still claims to hate the whole heavy metal scene. Kiske released a solo album, 1996’s Instant Clarity, which was pop and soft rock, except for “The Calling,” co-written by Kiske and Iron Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith, and the Smith-Hansen-Kiske collaboration “New Horizons”, the only heavy metal songs on the album. Since his first solo effort, Kiske has reinvented himself musically and relegated himself to eclectic-sounding albums such as Readiness to Sacrifice, SupaRed, and the self-titled Kiske; Kiske will also occasionally be a guest singer on other artists’ albums, but sometimes refuses to be credited by his given name in an effort to prevent being associated with the metal genre. In May 2008 Kiske released Past In Different Ways, an album that featured some of his old Helloween songs, albeit rearranged and re-recorded acoustically.

In addition to the firing of Kiske, Abdel-Nabi, whose inability to replicate Schwichtenberg’s machine-gun style of drumming hindered Helloween’s ability to play fan-favorites like “Eagle Fly Free” and “How Many Tears” live, was let go by the band. 1993 would come to a close for Helloween with no singer, no drummer, and no record contract (EMI released the band from its agreement when sales numbers for Pink Bubbles Go Ape and Chameleon were low).

 Master of the Rings, The Time of the Oath and Better Than Raw

Helloween returned in 1994 with former Pink Cream 69 frontman Andi Deris as its new lead singer and Uli Kusch, formerly of Kai Hansen’s Gamma Ray, on the drums. Deris was approached by Weikath to join the band in 1991, but he declined, despite being intrigued by the offer and dealing with emerging conflicts between him and Pink Cream 69. In the years since, however, Kiske was fired from Helloween and the issues within Pink Cream 69 worsened. Faced with the inevitability of his firing, Deris accepted Weikath’s offer. Despite not possessing the four-octave range boasted by Kiske, Deris’s vocal similarity to Kai Hansen, his enthusiasm, his strong songwriting skills, the return of the “classic” Helloween sound in songs such as “Where The Rain Grows” and “The Game Is On,” and the seeming rejuvenation of Weikath and Grapow seemed to strike a chord with the fans. With this new lineup and a new record contract with Castle Communications, Helloween released its comeback album, Master of the Rings.

In 1995, original drummer Ingo Schwichtenberg committed suicide by jumping in front of a train in his native Hamburg. In the years since his departure from Helloween, Schwichtenberg had gotten involved in drug-use and suffered from depression. Dedicated to his memory, 1996’s The Time Of The Oath re-established the band as one of the most popular European metal bands (see 1996 in music). Following another world tour, a double live album called High Live was released. In 1998 Helloween released Better Than Raw, one of the band’s heaviest albums since the full-length debut. The subsequent supporting tour was made up of stops in Europe, Japan, and Brazil, but on December 20, 1998, the band visited New York and played a show in Coney Island, the first show for Helloween in the United States in nearly a decade. The band would follow Better Than Raw with a 1999 release titled Metal Jukebox, a cover-album featuring Helloween’s versions of songs from such bands as Jethro Tull, Faith No More, The Beatles, ABBA, and Deep Purple.

 The Dark Ride and Rabbit Don’t Come Easy

The year 2000 saw the release of The Dark Ride, a more experimental and darker album than their previous releases. It came complete with downtuned guitars and a gruffer singing style from Deris. Immediately following the tour, Helloween parted ways with guitarist Roland Grapow and drummer Uli Kusch. One version of events states that Weikath, Deris and Grosskopf felt that Kusch and Grapow, in particular, were spending more time on and paying more attention to their new side-project, Masterplan, and that because they were not devoted 100% to Helloween they were let go; another version states that Grapow and Kusch had pushed to continue the direction that the band had taken with The Dark Ride and that Weikath, not wanting a repeat of the Kiske situation, huddled with Deris and Grosskopf, whereby the decision was made to get rid of them. In any case, they were fired, via e-mail (with Grapow’s wife finding out before he did that he had been fired), and decided to make Masterplan their full-time band, while their replacements were soon found in guitarist Sascha Gerstner (ex-Freedom Call, Neumond), and drummer Mark Cross (ex-Metalium, Kingdom Come, At Vance (touring support), currently in Firewind), culminating with the recording of another studio album, titled Rabbit Don’t Come Easy, in 2003. Cross could not finish the album due to mononucleosis, completing only two tracks; the drum tracks were completed by Motörhead’s Mikkey Dee. Stefan Schwarzmann, former drummer of Running Wild and Accept would shortly thereafter take over the drumming duties. Despite a somewhat tepid response to the album, Helloween nonetheless completed a successful world tour, highlighted by the return of classic songs such as “Starlight”, “Murderer”, “Keeper of the Seven Keys” and “How Many Tears” to the setlist. Additionally, the band toured the United States for the first time since 1989 playing to sold-out crowds at nearly every venue.

2005 saw yet another line-up change following the “Rabbits on the Run” tour as it became apparent that Helloween and Stefan Schwarzmann did not share the same musical vision. As further noted by the band, he had some trouble performing fast drum parts, so he was replaced by Dani Löble, the previous drummer of German metal band Rawhead Rexx. A change in record company also followed as they inked a deal with German label SPV. Any fears that what had now become a revolving door of band members would affect the quality of their new album were laid to rest as Helloween’s new studio album, titled Keeper of the Seven Keys – The Legacy, was released in October 28, 2005 in Germany, and November 8 in the U.S.A. to commercial and critical acclaim. The album had a pre-release single, Mrs. God, as well as a video for the track. The track Light the Universe was released as a single on November 22, featuring Candice Night of Blackmore’s Night on guest vocals. She also appears in the video clip for that track.

In late 2006, Helloween filmed and recorded shows in São Paulo (Brazil), Sofia (Bulgaria) and Tokyo (Japan), for their live album Keeper Of The Seven Keys – The Legacy World Tour 2005/2006. The DVD also featured extra footage of the band as well as interviews and a road movie. This is the second Helloween live album to feature Andi Deris as frontman, and third overall. It enjoyed chart success in several countries: Germany: 9 (DVD) & 58 (CD), Sweden: 9 (DVD), France: 10 (DVD)^{[citation needed]}.

Helloween has since completed their latest studio album Gambling with the Devil, which was released on October 23, 2007. It has received many positive reviews, with most fans praising the album as being one of the best Deris era albums. Despite being one of Helloween’s heavier albums, it is noted for featuring more keyboards. “As Long As I Fall”, the first single, was released in early September and available only via download (save for Japan, where it was released on CD). The video for the song is available at their official site.^[3]

Helloween teamed up with Kai Hansen’s current band Gamma Ray for their 2007/2008 “Hellish Rock” world tour, that started in early November 2007. Helloween were headlining and Gamma Ray were labeled as the “very special guest” with most shows also having fellow German “guest” Axxis. The tour went through Europe, Asia, South America as well as a few dates in the US. The tour is notable for Kai Hansen stepping on stage with his former band fellows Weikath and Grosskopf to perform hits “I Want Out” and “Future World” in the last encore segment of Helloween. ^[4]

(કાળી ચૌદશને દિવસે ગુજરાતમાં ઘરમાંથી કકળાટ કાઢવા માટે તે દિવસે..તેલમાં વડા(દાળવડા) તળી પહેલો ઘાણ  શેરી કે પોળના ચાર રસ્તા પાસે પધરાવવાંમાં આવે અને પછી પાણીનું કુંડાળું કરવામાં આવે..માન્યતા એવી પ્રવૃતે છે કે એથી ઘરમાંથી કકળાટ જાય! ખરેખર તો એ દિવસે દિલ સાફ કરી મનનો મેલ ધોઈ..આત્માને શુદ્ધ રાખી પ્રમાણિકતાથી જીવવાનો છે.)

નર્કસૂરનામે એક  અસૂર રાજા(પ્રયાગ-જ્યોતિષપૂરહાલ જે હાલ નેપાળના દક્ષિણ ભાગમાંઆવેલ છે) થઈ ગયો. તેણે ઈન્દ્રસાથે લડાઈ કરી, ઈન્દ્રને પરાજીત કરી તેના કિંમતીમાં કિંમતી આદિત્ય કાન-કુંડાળ છીનવી લઈ, દેવલોકની દેવી-દેવતા સાથે સત્યભામા અને સોળ હજાર દેવતાની પુત્રીઓને કેદમાં પુરી દીધા અને ત્રાસ આપવા લાગ્યો.

                     સત્યભામા(કૃષ્ણની પત્ની)એ કૃષ્ણનું સ્મરણ કરી વિનંતી કરી ” હે પ્રભુ ! અમોને આ ત્રાસથી બચાવો અને મને એવી શક્તિ આપો કે આ નર્કસૂરનો વધ હું કરી શકું.કૃષ્ણએ  સત્યભામાને શક્તિ પ્રદાન કરી. નર્કાસૂરને એવો શ્રાપ હતો કે એનું મોત કોઈ સ્ત્રી થી  થશે કૃષ્ણએ એમની ચાતુર્ય યુક્તિથી નર્કાસૂર સાથે ચડાઈ કરી અને રણભૂમીમાં સત્યભામાએ નર્કાસૂરનું ડોકું કાપી વધ કર્યો. સૌ દેવી-દેવતા તેમજ સોળહજાર  દેવી પુત્રીઓ ને જેલમાંથી મુકત કરાવી.કૃષ્ણ એ સોળ-હજાર દેવી-પુત્રીઓ સાથે લગ્ન કર્યા તેમજ ઈન્દ્ર પાસેથી છીનવી લીધેલા કાન-કુંડળ પાછા મેળવ્યા.વિજયના સન્માન રૂપે પાછા ફરતા કૃષ્ણએ નર્કા-સૂરને વધકરી એનું લોહીનું કપાળ પર તિલક કરેલ અને વહેલી સવારે પાછા ફરેલ ત્યારે ગામની સૌ સ્ત્રીઓ એ સુગંધી તેલ,સુખડ પવિત્ર જળ વડે સ્નાન કરાવી લોહીનો ચાંદલો સાફ કરી કંકુનો ચાંદલો કરી એમનું સ્વાગત કરી ઉત્સવ મનાવ્યો. ત્યારથી આપણાં હિન્દુ સંસ્કૃતિમાં  તેમાંય ખાસ કરીને મહારાષ્ટ્રમાં સૌ આ દિવસે( કાળી ચૌદસ) સૂર્યોદય પહેલા ઊઠી વહેલી સવારે સ્નાનકરી,ઘર આંગણે સાથિયો પાડી, પ્રભુની પૂજા કરેછે.
                 નવાઈની વાતતો આ ઘટનામાં એ છે કે નર્કાસૂરની માતા ભૂદેવીએ નર્કાસૂરના વધ પછી તે દિવસે શૉક મનાવવાને બદલે ઉત્સવ મનાવી સૂર્યોદય પહેલા સ્નાન કરી,ઘર આંગણે કંકુના સાથિયા પાડી શુભ-દિન તરીખે જાહેર કરેલ!

              આજે પણ દક્ષિણ-ભારતમાં સૂર્યોદય પહેલાં ઊઠી   કંકુ-સુગંધી તેલ , તેમજ તરબુચને રાક્ષસનું માથું માની એને કચડી લાલ તિલ્લક કર્યા પછી સુખડ તેમજ સુગંધી પાણીમાં સ્નાન કરેછે.મહારાષ્ટમાં સુર્યોદય પહેલાં ચણાના લોટમાં સુગંધી પાવડર સાથે સ્નાન કરી દૂધ-પૌવા તેમજ સાકર-સેવ ખાઈ સૌ કુટુંબીઓ ઉત્સવ મનાવે છે.
              ગુજરાતમાં અને કાઠીયાવાડમાં  આ દિવસે ઘરમાંથી કંકાસ અને કકળાટ કાઢવા મગના વડા તેલમાં તળી શેરી કે પોળના નાંકે વડુ મુકી પાણીની ગોળ ધાર કરી આસુરી તત્વોને દૂર કરેછે..સૌ સાથે મળી ઘર આંગણે રાતે દીપમાળા  પ્રગટાવી આ દિવસને આનંદથી ઉજવણી કરેછે..

 Legends behind Chhoti Diwali
The story goes that the demon king Narakasur ruler of Pragjyotishpur (a province to the South of Nepal) after defeating Lord Indra had snatched away the magnificent earrings of Aditi, the Mother Goddess (the ruler of Suraloka and a relative of Satyabhama, Lord Krishna’s wife) and imprisoned sixteen thousand daughters of the gods and saints in his harem.

On coming to know about this, Satyabhama was enraged by Narakasura’s malevolence towards women, and she appealed to Krishna to give her the golden chance to destroy Narakasura. The legend also says that Narakasura was given a curse that he would be killed by a woman. Krishna granted Satyabhama a boon to fight with Narakasura. With Krishna as the charioteer, Satyabhama entered the battle field. During the war, Krishna swooned for a while, a preordained divinely act adopted to empower Satyabhama to kill the demon. After Narakasura was beheaded, the imprisoned women were released, and Krishna accepted to marry them.

So on the day previous to Narakachaturdashi, Lord Krishna’s divine intervention led to the killing of the demon, Narakasura and liberation of the imprisoned damsels as well as recovery of the precious earrings of Aditi. As a symbol of that victory Lord Krishna smeared his forehead with the demon king’s blood. Krishna returned home in the very early morning of the Narakachaturdashi day. The womenfolk massaged scented oil to his body and gave him a good bath to wash away the filth from his body. Since then the custom of taking bath before sunrise on this day has become a traditional practice specially in Maharashtra.

It is interesting to note that Bhudevi, mother of the slain Narakasura, declared that his death should not be a day of mourning but an occasion to celebrate and rejoice. Since then, Deepavali is being celebrated by people every year with joyous celebrations with lot of fun and frolic, and fire works.

In South India that victory of the divine over the mundane is celebrated in a very peculiar way. People wake up before sunrise prepare a paste by mixing Kumkum in oil, symbolizing blood and after breaking a bitter fruit that represents the head of the demon King that was smashed by Krishna, apply that mixture on their foreheads. Then they have an oil bath using sandalwood paste.

In Maharashtra also, traditional early baths with oil and “Uptan” (paste) of gram flour and fragrant powders are a `must’. All through the ritual of baths, deafening sounds of crackers and fireworks are there in order that the children enjoy bathing. Afterward steamed vermicelli with milk and sugar or puffed rice with curd is served.
