Sara – Crohn’s Disease Not Getting in the Way of Growing Up

“Sara had been living with stomach pain and digestive problems for more than a year before we were finally referred to Dr. Barad,” says Shawndra, Sara’s mother. “But once we saw him, everything started to get better.”

When she was 10, Sara began to suffer from heartburn and stomach problems. “It was awful to see my young daughter go through that,” Shawndra says. “Sara’s energy level dropped; she quit soccer and didn’t want to walk our puppy anymore. She also lost 10 pounds – a lot for a sixth-grader her size. I knew something was wrong.”

Ashis Barad, MD, a pediatric gastroenterology specialist with Sutter Medical Group, first saw Sara at his clinic in December 2009. “He was incredibly patient and kind. And he’s fantastic with kids, Sara is always happy to see him,” Shawndra says about Dr. Barad. “But most importantly, he quickly started her down an effective treatment path. Less than a week after our initial appointment, he did a colonoscopy and endoscopy on her at Sutter Memorial Hospital. The procedures revealed that Sara’s ulcers were really bad. And a biopsy confirmed that she had Crohn’s Disease.”

Shawndra and Dr. Barad had suspected Crohn’s Disease, not only because of Sara’s symptoms, but also because her birth mother had the often-genetic, autoimmune disease which causes inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. “Dr. Barad had warned us that he might keep Sara in the hospital for a few additional days, depending on what he found during her diagnostic scopes. Sure enough, he kept Sara at Sutter Memorial for four days to give her intravenous antibiotics,“ Shawndra explains. “Dr. Barad was wonderful. He visited Sara every day she was in the hospital and made us all feel better since we knew Sara was in good hands.”

When Sara was discharged, one of her prescribed drugs was prednisone – a drug that reduces inflammation. “A side effect of prednisone is facial swelling, called ‘moon face.’ But Sara handled that just fine,” says Shawndra. “What mattered to her was that she was feeling better. She had more energy. It was good to have her back.”

“Sara only takes one pill a day now, she used to take four. Her swelling is gone and she’s back to playing soccer and walking the dog. She’ll probably be on medication forever, but that’s a small price to pay for a normal, healthy life,” says Shawndra. “We know that Sara may have flare ups in the future, but we feel confident that she can stay healthy under Dr. Barad’s care. I can’t say enough about Dr. Barad. He not only healed my daughter, he took care of her with such compassion and personal interest. We consider ourselves very fortunate that he is Sara’s doctor.”

 સેરા( બાળકીનું નામ)
                     સેરાની માતા શૉન્ડ્રા કહ્યું :”આખરે ડૉ.બારડનો સંપર્ક સાંધતા પહેલાં સારા છેલ્લા એક વરસથી પેટના દર્દ અને નબળી પાચન ક્રિયાથી પિડ્યા રહી હતી.બસ ડો.બારડને સંપર્ક સાંધતાજ સારાના દર્દમાં ઘણી રાહત થતી જોઈ.”

                     સેરા ૧૦ વરસની હતી ત્યારથાજ એ હાર્ટ-બર્ન(એસીડિટી) અને પેટના દર્દની શરૂઆત થઈ.”શૉન્ડ્રાએ કહ્યું: મારી નાની દિકરીની આટલી નાની ઉંમરે આ પરિસ્થિતી જોઈ દુ:ખ થાય.શરીરમાં કોઆ શકિત રહી નહોતા,સૉકર રમત રમવાનું છોડી દેવું પડ્યું,ડોગીને બહાર વૉક કરવા લઈ જતી તે પણ બંધ કરી દીધું.સેરાનું ૧૦ પાઉન્ડ વજન ઘટી ગયું.છઠ્ઠા ધોરણમાં ભણતા બાળક માટે આ વધારે પડ્તું કહેવાય..મને શંકા પડી કે કઈ અજકતું બની રહી છે.”

આશિષ બારડ,એમ.ડી. પિડિયાટ્રીક ગેસ્ટ્રોએન્ટ્રોલોજી સ્પેસ્યાલીસ્ટ, સટર મેડીલકલ ગ્રુપ, એમણે સેરાને પોતાને કલિનીકમાં ડીસેમબર-૦૯માં તપાસી હતી..”ડો.બારડ, ઘણીજ ધીરજ અને માયાળું સ્વભાવના છે. અને બાળકો સાથે ઓતપ્રોત થઈ જાય. સેરા, એમને જુવે એટલે ખુશ ખુશ! શૉન્ડ્રાએ ડો.બારડ વિશે આગળ કહેતા કહ્યું: મહત્વની વસ્તું એ છે કે એમની સારેવાર નીચે  તબિયત ઘણીજ સુધાર પર આવતી જણાય.એક વીકની અંદર એમણે કૉલોનૉસ્કોપી, એન્ડોસ્કોપી નો ટેસ્ટ સટર મેડીકલમાં કર્યો.અને ખબર પડી કે સેરાને પેટ  ચાંદા( અલ્સર) સારી પઠે ફેલાય ગયાં હતાં. અને બાયોપ્સીમાં ખબર પડી કે સેરાને ક્રોહન્સ(Crohn’s disease)ને દર્દ છે.

                  શૉન્ડ્રા અને ડૉ. બારડના માનવા મુજબ આ દર્દ ના સિમ્પટૉમ પરકટથી નહી પણ સેરાની જન્મ આપનાર મા ને જનેટીક ઑટોએમ્યુન દર્દને લઈને ગેસટ્રીકનું ઇન્ફ્લમેસન થાય. ડૉ બારડે  કહ્યુંકે સેરાના ડાયાગ્નોસ્ટીક  સ્કૉપ પરિણામ મુજબ તેણીને કદાક થોડા વધારે દિવસ હોસ્પિટલામાં રાખવી પડશે એજ પ્રમાણે સેરા ચાર દિવસ હોસ્પિટલામાં રાખી intravenous antibiotics આપી. શૉન્ડ્રા વિગત આપતાં કહ્યું:” ડૉ.બારડ અદભૂત ડૉકટર! એ દરરોજ હોસ્પિટલમાં તેણીની મુલાકાત લેતા એથી તેણીને પણ સારું ફીલ થતું  તેમજ અમને પણ ખબર હતી ક સેરા એક સારા ડૉકતરની કેરમાં છે.”

       સેરાને હોસ્પિટલામાંથી રજા આપતી વખતે જે દવા આપી તે PREDNISONE જે ઇન્ફ્લેમશનને ઓછું કરે. અને સાઈડ ઈફેકટ સ્વૉલીગ પણ સેરા એ સહન કરી લેતી હતી. મુખ્યવાત એ છે કે સેરા ને હવે ઘણુંજ સારું હતું અને હવે એનામાં શક્તિ આવી રહી હતી અને ફરી પાછી પોતાને નૉરમલ લાઈફમાં આવી ગઈ.

 સેરા હવે માત્ર એકજ પીલ્સ લે છે જે પહેલાં ચાર લેતી હતી. જે સૉજો હતો તે જતો રહ્યો. હવે તેણી સોકર ગેઈમ, ડોગ ને બહાર વૉક કરવા લઈ જઈ શકે છે. હા તેણી ને જીવનભર દવા લેવી પડશે.આવા દર્દમાં  તંદુરસ્ત રહેવા જરૂરી છે.પણ અમને ખબર છે કે ડૉ.બારડની સંભાળ નીચે અમારી દીકરીને કશો વાંધો નહી આવે.ડૉ.બારડ વિશે કહું એટલું ઓછું છે. એમણે માત્ર મારી દીકરીની સંભાળ લીધી એટલુંજ નહી પણ એમણે એક પોતાની વ્યક્તિ ગણી જે સારવાર કઈ એના અમો આભારી છીએ. અમે નસીબદાર છીએ કે અમોને ડૉ,બારડ જેવા સેરાને સારા ડોકટર મળ્યા.
 

દીકરા આશિષ તને  અમારા લાખ લાખ આશિષ અને આવીજ રીતે એક ડૉકટર તરીકે સાચા માનવ બની સૌ દર્દી પર વ્યક્તિગત ધ્યાન આપી  સેવા કરે અને યશ , જશ અને કિર્તી મળે.એજ પ્રભુ પ્રાર્થના.
